This session will feature two distinguished speakers: Emilie Briggs and Hugo van Belois. Emilie will revisit her insightful presentation from the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) conference, and Hugo will share his extensive experience in odour nuisance management in the Netherlands.
Emilie Briggs, from the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA), will discuss the Community Odour Monitoring Program (COMP). Her talk will highlight how the WBEA’s combination of citizen science and odour monitoring has successfully gathered valuable data on air quality in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region. Emilie will cover the network of ambient air monitoring stations, the trends observed in odour data from 2018 to 2022, and the predictive models used to identify odour sources.
Joining Emilie, we have Hugo van Belois, an environmental engineer with over 30 years of experience in the Netherlands' odour nuisance field. Hugo, a graduate of Wageningen University, has a rich background in both consultancy and governmental roles. His presentation, titled "In search of an odour policy that integrates all FIDOS-factors to describe odour nuisance on a local scale," will provide insights into the current challenges and developments in the Netherlands' odour policy.
Hugo will discuss the limitations of using hedonic tone as a parameter for regulating odour nuisance and the need to incorporate all FIDOS factors (Frequency, Intensity, Duration, Offensiveness, and Sensitivity) into odour policy. He will explain why the standard P98 – odour concentrations – is insufficient for accurately describing odour nuisance in local situations. Hugo’s extensive experience and expertise will offer a valuable perspective on developing more comprehensive and effective odour management strategies.
The event will be structured with Emilie’s talk lasting 20 minutes, followed by Hugo’s 20-minute presentation. After the presentations, there will be a 20-minute roundtable discussion where attendees can engage with the speakers, ask questions, and explore the topics in more depth. This interactive session aims to foster a collaborative dialogue on improving odour monitoring and management practices.
