  The final program for the 24-Hour Marathon on Odour/Odor Management (24h-MOM) is now available. The international odour/odor community is getting ready for the event, which will take place on November 12, 2025.

   The 24h-MOM will bring together experts, innovators, and stakeholders from across all the continents for a full day of presentations and round tables focused on developments, case studies, and discussions in odour/odor management. Starting in Australia and New Zealand, the event will progress through Asia, Europe, South America, and North America, ensuring representation from diverse regions and perspectives.

   A new edition of the well-known NOSE2026 International Conference on Environmental Monitoring of Odours and VOCs will take place from 6 to 8 July 2026 in Bologna, Italy, hosted at the Royal Hotel Carlton. This event, organized by AIDIC (Italian Association of Chemical Engineering), is the 10th edition of the conference series and presents a key opportunity for industrial and academic experts globally to exchange the latest advances, technologies, and research in odour and volatile organic compounds monitoring and control.

   The conference program includes plenary lectures by invited speakers, lecture presentations, and poster sessions. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art developments in environmental odour monitoring and control. The full collection of selected papers will be published in the Chemical Engineering Transactions Journal, indexed by SCOPUS and SCHOLAR, ensuring wide dissemination of the research presented.

   The German standard for calculating uncertainty in odour measurements—VDI-EE 3884 Part 1.1—was officially published in October 2024. That is a year ago, so why did we wait that long to publish something about this new standard? because it is a bit complex and there is a bit of a history here. That history started during the development of the revission of the EN13725 a few years ago. In the conversations related to the calculation of the uncertainty, there were two groups there, one that we will call the "Italo-Dutch" school and another one being the "German" school. The thing is that the Italo-Dutch school finally developed this part. The reasons why that happened are well beyond this simple journalistic piece of text, but the Germans were not happy about it, and this was the begining of the path that led to the standard VDI-EE 3884 Part 1.1.

   The EN 13725:2022 standard came with a new set of statistical tools for calculating uncertainty. However, until now, work in certain areas related to the measurement of uncertainty in environmental samples had been purely theoretical. This aspect has undergone significant methodological revision in Germany in response to the results of a comprehensive comparative study. The new VDI-EE 3884 Part 1.1 standard modifies and corrects the method of calculating uncertainty, moving away from the core elements of the EN 13725:2022 standard.

   On September 22 and 23, a new meeting of CEN/TC 264/WG 41, that is, the Working Group 41 of the Technical Committee 264 on Air Quality of the European Committee for Standardization, took place. The agenda for the day included several items, but in the end, draft 3, which deals with field validation, took up most of the group's working hours.

   The WG41 is working in three standards: 1) Instrumental Odour Monitoring Systems (IOMS) - Part 1: Definitions and general aspect; 2) Instrumental Odour Monitoring Systems (IOMS) - Part 2: Technical specifications and QA/QC requirements and 3) Instrumental Odour Monitoring Systems (IOMS) - Part 3: Field validation. This last draft has not been discussed during the second stage of the development of the standard until now. But the experts took the challenge and a text was delivered on time to activate the 3 PWIs, which is the next step in the CEN process.
