The region of the Canary Islands, in Spain published in December 2025 a new regulation on odour impact

   On 18 December 2025, the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands in Spain published Decree 185/2025 of 10 December, on the protection of the atmosphere of the Canary Islands. This Decree introduced for the first time in Spain odour limit values at a regional level.

   The Decree 185/2025 of 10 December, on the protection of the atmosphere of the Canary Islands introduces a new regulation on odour pollution, classifying odour-generating activities into three levels with the following odour ambient air target values: 3, 6 and 9 ouE/m³, measured according to the UNE EN 13725 standard.

    In Article 22 of this Decree, the target values are set for odour immission according to three categories, based on the 98th percentile of hourly mean odour concentration over a calendar year:

• Waste management activities likely to generate odours.

• Use of animal by-products.

• Processes involving animal remains.

• Slaughterhouses.

• Pulp manufacturing.

• Petroleum refining.

• Storage of petroleum products.

• Wastewater treatment and related facilities.

• Meat processing.

• Fattening feed processes.

• Intensive livestock farming.

• Food smoking.

• Treatment of organic products.

• Oil refining.

• Dairy processes.

• Processing of fats and oils.

• Production of aromas and fragrances.

• Brewing.

• Production of animal feed.

• Tobacco industry.

• Manufacture of chocolate or cocoa.

• Industrial production of bread, doughs or biscuits.

• Confectionery.

• Drying of plant products.

• Roasting or toasting of coffee.
